Chapter 1 Destination – choose your own way

This is part of the ‘How to’ coaching series.  An ongoing series of activities to make your business successful.  Follow it step by step and see positive results as you develop a robust business model set on a solid foundation.

3 – I have a business plan that I refer to regularly.

Do you have a business plan – a plan that lays out the route map of how you will develop your business?

You do?, excellent… so when did you last look at it?  When did you make time to review the plan and check that you are on track with the goals?

The businesses I’ve worked with, that have integrated their plans into their business as part of the ‘usual’, have all achieved great things.  Those I’ve met that have started with good intentions, yet chosen not to follow their own plans, have often not reached the levels they could have.

How is it that some people achieve, and some don’t?  Often, it’s as simple as choosing to keep focused on the plan you made at the start; and being flexible enough to change it when you need to.

There are many Business plan formats.  The key thing is, whatever format you choose, make it the thing that drives your business.

The ‘How to’ bit.

Build your business plan into your team’s daily jobs.  Make the activities part of their ongoing appraisals. Set targets and review these regularly.  As well as the main plan, have a rolling 3-year plan, a simple 1 Page annual plan with quarterly reviews of the goals and targets.  Whatever you do – set targets and goals, then keep measuring and testing your progress against them.

One key thought! Keep your business plans as simple as possible!
